Blogging Do’s and Dont’s!

In This Post, We’ll Talk About Blogging Do’s and Dont’s

Why do people blog? Blogging has become a powerful platform for sharing ideas, drawing attention to current social trends, or for advice on how to solve problems faced by millions of people worldwide. There are also people who create blogs for the sole purpose of monetizing them in one form one or another.
Whatever your reason may be I’m going to share with you some powerful blogging tips that will definitely help you to improve your blog and increase your blogging knowledge.

Research your Chosen Niche

It is important to do your initial research, when you have chosen the niche for your blog it is always a good idea to find out exactly what attracts people to your targeted niche. Let’s say for example you have chosen to create a blog about weight loss, you should read up on current weight loss programs, new trends in the industry and what’s making headlines today. Of course it would be best if you could write about your own personal experiences with weight loss, how you struggle with it on a daily basis or how you have managed to overcome your own weight issues.

Unlock your Creative Brain

So you have chosen your niche, you have completed your research, and you want to start creating content for your blog. You now have to come up with unique and informative content that will cater to to you the needs of your audience, whether it be in the form of articles, videos or informative how to’s everybody has something to contribute. Remember to speak to your audience, be honest and create a relationship with your readers, that is the best way to ensure a loyal following.

Promote your Blog

Build it and they will come! Well actually, no they won’t. This is a mistake that many newbies make when it comes to blogging, they spend weeks creating a blog that is visually appealing and then they sit back and wait for the visitors to pour in. Unfortunately this is not how it works, in order for people to find your blog you have to promote it within search engines such as Google, Yahoo, and Bing.

So for example your blog about weight loss, let’s say you wrote an article about “how to lose belly fat” if your article does not appear on the first page of Google, Yahoo or Bing for that key phrase then nobody’s going to find it. You basically have two choices optimize your article using SEO or promote it using paid advertising such as PPC.

Update your Blog Regularly

There are two reasons why you should ensure that you keep adding fresh content to your blog.
One – by adding fresh content on a regular basis you attract more attention from the search engines, this means that they come back to crawl your blog more often resulting in faster indexing of your posts.

Number two – you have to keep your readers interested, adding new content to your blog on a regular basis will keep your readers interested and coming back more often.

\There is nothing set in stone as to how often you should add new content to your blog, the general consensus is that adding one to two new pieces of content per week is fine, obviously if you have the time to add more than you should do it but more importantly be consistent, find a schedule that suits you best and stick to it.

Fighting Comment Spam

Unfortunately comment spam has become a major headache that you have to deal with, WordPress and other CMS such as Drupal and Blogger are popular because they are interactive, but at the same time they leave themselves open to spam. You will have to moderate all comments on your blog, and the best way to do this is to enable spam filters such as Askimet. You can even take it a step further by installing a captcha plug-in, these help to prevent spambots and will also discourage manual spam.

What to Avoid When Blogging!

There are many good practices that you should employ when blogging, but at the same time there are also certain things that you should avoid.

Proofread Before you Post

You may think that you are really gifted when it comes to the English language but the least you can do often putting in a lot of effort to create content for your blog is to spend a few minutes proofreading. A blog with a lot of spelling and grammatical errors is a real turnoff for most people and goes a long way to undermine your credibility. With spell check and grammar check built into most applications it has become easier to double check your work before making it available to the general public, so don’t be lazy!

Don’t Publish Nonsence

Don’t write just for the sake of writing, if you are experiencing writer’s block or have no fresh ideas, trying do some research this may help you come up with some new ideas for creating content. You must remember that people are spending their precious time reading your content and your job is to ensure that you provide unique, informative content for your readers. A good rule of thumb is to provide articles with at least 800 to 1000 words, you can also provide more content by providing videos and images related to your article.

Copied Content is the Devil’s Wor

Copying content from other blogs or article directories is a definite no-no, not only will you be violating copyrights, you may also be penalized by Google and other search engines for posting duplicate content on your blog. Also take into consideration that the original author may report you to your hosting company which can result in a suspension of your posting privileges.

Keep it Clean

Do not post offensive content, steer clear of anything that would offend someone. Try to stick to the facts and don’t let emotion get in the way, we live in a litigious society so unless you want to be dealing with lawsuits I would suggest that you think before you post.

Hard-Sell Equals no Sale

I see this as an emerging trend, maybe because of the bad economy more and more people flocking to the Internet in an attempt to generate income. These fine to monetize your blog, but if you are going to be hard selling to your audience at every opportunity you are looking for trouble.

People are becoming wise to the so-called hard sell tactics, remember the old saying “nobody likes to be sold to, but everybody likes to buy”, there is nothing wrong with suggesting a product which you have tried or linking to products which are generally for sale online.

Credibility is Queen (That’s because content is King)

Never lie to your readers especially when you are posting product reviews, rather be up front and tell them yes that the product is excellent and that you are using it or have used it in the pased but that you are also an affiliate and stand to make money if they buy through your link. Believe it or not people appreciate honesty, and may still use your referral link to buy if they are interested.

In conclusion, blogging is not for everyone it’s certainly requires dedication and hard work but at the same time a sense of satisfaction to see your labor pay off, whether it be from appreciative comments on your blog or from sales made because of referrals. Hopefully these tips will help you with your own blog, if you have anything to share please use the comment form below, but remember spamming is not tolerated so don’t waste your time.
