Google has reportedly laid off over 100 employees from its cloud design and research teams this week, marking another wave of Google layoffs as the tech giant intensifies its focus on artificial intelligence. The recent Google layoffs primarily impacted “quantitative user experience research” and “platform and service experience” teams within Google Cloud. These groups were instrumental in analyzing user behavior to inform and refine product design. Reports indicate that some cloud design teams saw reductions of nearly half their staff, with a significant number of affected roles based in the United States. Impacted employees have until early December to explore internal opportunities within Google.
These design-focused job losses are part of a larger ongoing initiative to streamline operations and reallocate resources towards artificial intelligence infrastructure and product development. Earlier this year, Google reduced headcount in its cloud business and offered voluntary exit packages across various departments, including human resources, hardware, search, ads, marketing, finance, and commerce. The company also eliminated over a third of its middle management positions to accelerate decision-making and enhance agility.
