Spotify Premium Subscribers

Spotify hit 300 million Premium subscribers in Q2 2026. It added 7 million in the quarter, 1 million above its own forecast, with growth in every region. Spotify credits a strong global promotion and a 20th-anniversary in-app experience that nearly 100 million users engaged with in its first six days. That week drove Spotify’s biggest single day of subscriber intake ever.

About 39% of Spotify users pay (300 million of 777 million). That conversion rate is the number I watch most. It tells you how good Spotify is at turning free listeners into customers.

Premium brings in 91% of revenue. Ads are still small: €446 million in Q2 2026, up just 1% (3% at constant currency). Spotify said automated (programmatic) sales made up nearly 40% of ad revenue in Q2 and expects ads to return to double-digit growth in the second half of 2026.

Spotify free cash flow by year

Free cash flow is the cash left after running the business and paying for equipment. For years Spotify barely made any. That has changed fast.

Year Free cash flow
2018 €209 million
2019 €440 million
2020 €183 million
2021 €277 million
2022 €21 million
2023 €678 million
2024 €2.29 billion
2025 €2.87 billion
12 months to June 30, 2026 €3.26 billion

Source: Spotify Q2 2026 Shareholder Deck (non-IFRS reconciliation tables).

A few things stand out:

  • 2022 was the low point. Spotify generated just €21 million in free cash flow that year.
  • Free cash flow more than tripled from 2023 to 2024, after Spotify cut costs and raised prices.
  • Q2 2026 was a record second quarter at €797 million. Spotify says it has generated €8.8 billion in free cash flow in total since the start of 2016.
  • Capital spending is tiny for a company this size: €21 million in Q2 2026.

Spotify vs other subscription platforms

Here is how Spotify’s latest official numbers compare with two other platforms I track on this site. Each company counts users differently, so read the definitions.

Platform Latest official users Paying customers Source and date
Spotify 777M monthly active users 300M Premium subscribers Spotify, Jun 30, 2026
Netflix Audience approaching 1B people 325M+ paid memberships Netflix, Q4 2025 and Q2 2026 letters
X (with Grok) 550M monthly active users 4.4M X Premium subscribers SpaceX prospectus, Mar 31, 2026

Spotify converts about 39% of its users into paying subscribers. That is far higher than X, where paid users are under 1% of the monthly audience. See my Netflix subscribers and Twitter (X) statistics pages for the full breakdowns.

Spotify Ad-Supported Users and Advertising

Spotify’s free tier had 494 million ad-supported MAUs in Q2 2026, up 14% year over year and growing faster than Premium. That is a huge audience, but the money is small: ad-supported revenue was €446 million in Q2 2026, about 9% of total revenue.

What changed in Spotify’s ad business in 2026:

  • Automated buying is taking over. Auction-based sales through the Spotify Ad Exchange and Spotify Ads Manager were nearly 40% of ad revenue in Q2 2026, up from just over 30% in Q1, according to the Q2 earnings call.
  • Direct sales are shrinking. Spotify said price optimization in that channel is complete and it is stabilizing.
  • In-house ad server. Spotify finished moving its ad inventory to its own ad server in Q2 2026.
  • Outlook. Management expects ads to return to double-digit growth in the second half of 2026.

My take for marketers: Spotify audio and video ads are underpriced relative to the audience size, especially in markets like India. Test small budgets through Spotify Ads Manager before the auction gets crowded.

Spotify ARPU and Pricing

Spotify’s Premium ARPU was €4.89 a month in Q2 2026, up 7% year over year (7.4% at constant currency), driven by price increases.

Spotify Market Share

Spotify does not publish a streaming market share figure, but its own numbers give a clear picture.

  • Spotify says it accounts for roughly 30% of global recorded music revenue (Spotify newsroom, Jan 28, 2026).
  • Spotify also says more than 750 million people pay for music streaming every month across all services. With 300 million Premium subscribers, Spotify has roughly 40% of that paying base.
  • In 2025, Spotify’s payouts grew by more than 10% while other industry income sources grew closer to 4%, which Spotify says made it the main driver of industry growth.

Treat the 40% as our own calculation from two Spotify statements made at different times, not an official market share figure.

How Much Does Spotify Pay Artists?

Spotify paid more than $11 billion to the music industry in 2025, up more than 10% from 2024. Spotify calls it the largest annual payment to music from any retailer in history. Independent artists and labels accounted for about half of all royalties.

Loud & Clear 2026 metric (data for 2025) Value
Paid to the music industry $11 billion+
Artists generating $100,000+ from Spotify alone 13,800+ (nearly 1,400 more than 2024)
Artists generating $1 million+ 1,500+
Artists generating $10 million+ 80+
Share of recorded music revenue from Spotify ~30%
Share of Spotify’s music revenue paid out ~two-thirds (almost 70%)

Spotify Loud and Clear report website with royalty data

How much does Spotify pay per stream?

Spotify does not pay a fixed rate per stream. It pools revenue in each market, then pays rights holders (labels, distributors, publishers) based on their share of total streams. Those rights holders then pay artists under their own contracts. That is why “per stream” figures you see online vary so much.

One rule matters for small artists: since 2024, a track needs at least 1,000 streams in the previous 12 months to generate recorded-music royalties (Spotify for Artists, Nov 2023 announcement).

Spotify Podcast Statistics

Spotify lists 7 million podcast titles on its platform. In 2025 Wrapped, The Joe Rogan Experience was the top podcast globally for the sixth year in a row, followed by The Diary of a CEO with Steven Bartlett and The Mel Robbins Podcast.

In Q2 2026 Spotify said podcast growth was “led by sponsorship gains within our Owned & Licensed portfolio”. It also launched Personal Podcasts, an AI tool that generates personalized audio episodes with monthly credits included in Premium.

Spotify for Creators website for podcasters

As a podcast host, here is my take: Spotify is now a video podcast platform as much as an audio one. If you run a show, publish video to Spotify, not just YouTube. I list shows worth studying in my best SEO podcasts, best digital marketing podcasts and best affiliate marketing podcasts roundups.

Spotify Audiobook Statistics

Spotify entered audiobooks in 2022 and now lists 700,000 audiobooks (company info, Oct 2026). In select markets, Premium includes a monthly allowance of audiobook listening hours, with paid top-ups.

  • Romantasy dominated 2025. Spotify said authors like Rebecca Yarros and Sarah J. Maas led its global audiobook charts, and backlist titles kept coming back (Wrapped 2025).
  • Audiobooks+ is expanding. In Q2 2026 Spotify announced new Audiobooks+ add-on tiers, with Family and Student versions later in 2026.
  • Narrated Articles launched in Q2 2026 with publishers like The Atlantic, Vogue, Variety, Billboard and Wired, in markets where audiobooks are available, counted against users’ monthly audiobook allowance.

Spotify in India

Spotify launched in India on February 26, 2019. It does not publish India user numbers, but a few data points stand out.

  • Arijit Singh was the No. 9 most streamed artist in the world on Spotify in 2025, the only Indian artist in the global top 10 (Wrapped 2025).
  • Pricing is among the lowest anywhere. Premium Standard costs ₹139 a month, about $1.60, compared with $12.99 in the U.S.
  • Platinum (₹299 a month) covers up to three people at the same address, a shared plan priced for Indian households.

For Indian creators, that low price plus a huge free tier means Spotify is a reach play first. Use it to grow listeners for your music or podcast, then monetize elsewhere.

How Many Songs Are on Spotify?

Spotify has over 100 million tracks, 7 million podcast titles and 700,000 audiobooks, available in 184 markets (Spotify company info page, checked Oct 11, 2026). More than 100,000 new songs are released every day across the industry, according to Spotify’s head of music.

Spotify Stats Glossary

  • MAU (monthly active users): anyone who used Spotify (free or paid) at least once in the last 30 days of the period.
  • Premium subscribers: paying users, including members of Family and Duo plans.
  • Ad-supported MAUs: free users who hear or see ads.
  • ARPU: average monthly Premium revenue per subscriber (€4.89 in Q2 2026). It is lower than list prices because of family, student and emerging-market plans.
  • Constant currency: growth with currency swings removed. Spotify reports in euros, so a weak dollar can make growth look slower.

How to Check Your Own Spotify Stats

A lot of people searching “Spotify stats” want their own listening numbers, not company data. Here are the official and popular ways.

1. Spotify Wrapped (official, once a year)

Spotify Wrapped launches in early December inside the app. It shows your top artists, songs, genres and minutes listened for the year. The 2025 edition launched December 3, 2025.

2. Download your Spotify data (official, any time)

Go to your Spotify account page, open Privacy settings and request your data. “Extended streaming history” includes every play with timestamps. Spotify says it can take up to 30 days to prepare. You can open the files in Excel or Google Sheets.

3. stats.fm (third-party app)

stats.fm connects to your Spotify account and shows top tracks, artists and listening time over different periods. Importing your extended history file unlocks lifetime stats.

stats.fm official website, a third-party Spotify stats app

4. Stats for Spotify (third-party website)

statsforspotify.com shows your top tracks, artists and genres for the last 4 weeks, 6 months and all time after you log in with Spotify.

Stats for Spotify official website

A quick safety tip: only connect apps through Spotify’s official login screen, and remove access you no longer use from your Spotify account’s “Manage apps” page.

What Spotify’s Numbers Mean for Creators and Marketers

  • Audio is still growing. 81 million new users in a year. Podcasts and audiobooks are riding that wave.
  • Most users don’t pay, but they do listen. 494 million ad-supported users is a big, cheap reach pool for audio ads, especially in India where Premium starts at ₹139.
  • Discovery is algorithmic. With 100,000+ new songs a day, playlists, AI DJ and video clips decide who gets heard. The same is true for podcasts.
  • The middle class of artists is real. 13,800 artists made $100,000+ from Spotify alone in 2025. Niche wins.

Final Take

Spotify in 2026 is bigger and, for the first time, consistently profitable. 777 million users, 300 million paying subscribers, a record 33.4% gross margin and €797 million in free cash flow in a single quarter. Ads are the weak spot, and Spotify says that should turn around in the second half of 2026. For creators, the takeaway is simple: the audience is there, and video and AI-driven discovery decide who gets found. I will update these numbers when Spotify reports Q3 2026 in November.
