📈 From Agency to $600K and $1.2M Exits

Russell started SEO in 2009 with an agency. In 2016, through the Niche Hacks group, he learned about niche websites and realized passive income made more sense alongside the agency. 💡

His first site, in the baby niche, sold in 2018 for $600K. He then built two sites, one in the home niche and one in the pet niche, and sold them in 2024 for $1.2 million. 🐾

The pet site earned from affiliates and display ads. The affiliate company had VC investors who were looking for investments, which led to a cash deal: 50% upfront and 50% after one year, because bought websites can crash within six months. 🤝

💼 Why Your Website Must Be a Real Business

With niche sites getting hammered by Google updates, Russell’s view is clear: “You should not look at it as an affiliate website or a blog. Those days of Google sending traffic to a small website are long gone.” 🚫

Treat it as a business with multiple traffic sources. If you have budget, start with paid ads to learn which keywords are profitable, then use SEO and links to send more traffic to pages that already make money. Email marketing is still an amazing channel. 📊

📧 The Paid Ads Plus Email Funnel Math

His pet niche example:

  • ❌ A Google ad for “pet insurance” in Amsterdam has a very high CPC, often more than the affiliate commission
  • ✅ A Meta ad for “how to look after your shih tzu” might cost a dollar or two per click
  • 🎁 Give a cheat sheet or lead magnet to get them on your email list
  • 📬 Over a year of 52 to 365 emails, a $1–2 subscriber can make you $10–12, a 10x return

“And the cream on the pudding is if you get social traffic or SEO traffic. It’s free traffic.” 🍰

🤖 Why He’s Building a GEO Agency

Through his niche site days, Russell met many business leaders at conferences. His link building agency WH Links does genuine custom outreach instead of marketplaces, so link quality is high. He’s now moving those clients to a new GEO agency. 🔄

The logic: you may not get clicks, but a real business still needs visibility. If people ask which coffee maker or washing machine is best and your competitor is in the answer, they may buy on Amazon from your competitor. “Invariably, your sales are going to reduce.” 🛒

🧘 Stress, Parenting and Living Below Your Means

With a four-year-old and a six-year-old, Russell admits anger is “a work in progress.” He decides every morning not to shout, and by evening he’s shouting. 😅

Work stress is different. If you live below your means and have savings, “80 to 90% of stress reduces.” If a client is unhappy, you can refund them and focus on your legacy. 🧘

On parenting, he follows advice from an interview he once saw: you can’t groom your kids. Live the best version of yourself, and they’ll copy you. 👨‍👧‍👧

More from our rapid-fire round:

  • 👨 One person to bring back: his dad, who passed away when Russell was 12, so he could know him as a man
  • 🍽️ A day with: Warren Buffett, for his principles of strong foundations, real businesses, and integrity
  • 🙌 Regrets: none, because every obstacle taught him something
  • 💍 Best year: marrying his wife, who brought stability and focus
  • 🏦 Worst year: at about 28, eight years of savings vanished when a cooperative bank went bankrupt. He rebuilt it in about a year.
  • 🕊️ Fear of death: none. “We all have an expiry date,” so he lives fully today.
  • 📞 Favourite contact: his mom, whom he calls twice a day
  • 🌍 Where to live: India, or Dubai for safety
  • 🎟️ $10M lottery: nothing would change. He’d keep investing, and he prefers teaching people to fish over donating to big organizations.

💡 Best and Worst Advice, and Money Lessons

Best advice: find your purpose and stick to it. People see things from their own perspective, like the blind men and the elephant, so respect their opinions but don’t let them affect you. 🐘

Worst advice: don’t invest in crypto. In 2009, clients offered to pay him in Bitcoin, and he refused because he didn’t understand it. He thinks he might have had 600 to 1,000 Bitcoin. ₿

His best investment is self-improvement, especially the time he invests in learning. That’s how $20 turned into $1.2 million. 📚

He’s a minimalist who invests in real estate, stocks, and gold instead of luxury brands. His best financial advice: live below your means. “If you’re earning $100, save $50, spend $50.” And if you earn $100, focus on making $1,000. 💰
