“I was hella toxic.” Few people answer a personal interview that honestly. Annie Ma did, and both of us ended up in tears. 😢
At the Chiang Mai SEO conference, I sat down with Annie Ma, social media manager at ODYS, not to talk SEO but to talk about her life: her dad, her family, her relationships and her fears. 🎙️
This is one of the deepest interviews I’ve ever done. 💛
📊 In this episode, we unpacked:
- 🌏 How she found the SEO community
- 💔 Losing her dad
- 💰 Love, money and independence
- 🧘 Stress, space and compromise
- 🪞 Toxic mistakes and imposter syndrome
- 👵 Family, trauma and forgiveness
- 🚀 Best year, worst year and her 5-year goal

🌏 How She Found the SEO Community
Annie joined Toastmasters for personal and leadership development. There she met Mads and Annie, who introduced her to the SEO community at the SEO Mastery Summit in Saigon, Vietnam. 🎤
“Everyone is so genuine and authentically themselves.” In the corporate world she had to hide her eccentric side. In SEO she could be herself, “and I felt like I shined so much more.” ✨
Outspoken people like Craig Campbell made it feel freeing. Her viral moment came from accidentally calling him “Chris.” He played along by pretending to throw water at her, and they recreated it for social media in one take. 😂

💔 Losing Her Dad
Her dad’s birthday, November 7, was the day she traveled to the event. He passed away about six years ago. 🕯️
He was a quiet provider who immigrated to the US and never took a vacation. When he lost his job, he was too scared to tell anyone, so he stayed home drinking until his liver failed. “I want people to know the consequences” of alcohol dependence. 🍷
If she could bring him back, she’d take him to Chiang Mai to see elephants and show him she’s doing okay. When she feels afraid, she tells herself it’s “just my dad’s spirit watching over me.” He’s also her hero. 💛
She calls herself a social drinker and says alcoholism runs in families, so she stays aware of it. 🍸
💰 Love, Money and Independence
Love or money? “Why choose? You can have both.” Younger Annie would have picked love. Older Annie knows money matters too. 💸
Her parents fell in love and had her at 18 or 19 without money, and the result was tension and constant fighting. So now she prioritizes finances. 🏠
Her advice: “Make your own money.” Don’t depend on a partner. Learn skills that create value, and if your partner isn’t financially savvy, help them grow. 💪
On dating in 2025: “You have to love yourself first.” If you expect a partner to fill an empty basket, you’ll drain them and end up in a toxic relationship. 🧺
🧘 Stress, Space and Compromise
Her husband is a digital nomad who does email marketing for e-commerce. What she values most is acceptance and patience. 💑
She disagrees with “happy wife, happy life”: both partners should be happy. A relationship is about compromise, like apologizing when she missed their daily 15-minute call during the conference instead of using work as an excuse. 📞
For stress, meditation is number one. Not suppressing it, but naming it (“I’m feeling drained”) and taking five minutes to breathe. Space matters too: when arguments get heated, table it until both of you are calm. 🧘
🪞 Toxic Mistakes and Imposter Syndrome
Annie is honest about her past: around 18, she cheated on partners because she “didn’t have the balls to break up with them” and blamed them for it. Seeing them and their families hurt made her change. Now she’s more empathetic and simply clear when ending things. 🙏
Her biggest fear is not being smart enough to be here. She came to SEO events knowing only the basics and faked confidence to interview people. That backfired: “If your cup is full, you can’t learn anymore.” 🍵
It took 10 months to come in “with an empty cup” and become humble enough to ask questions and genuinely learn. 📚
She also fears ego death: she likes the identity she’s built, but she’s learning that “I don’t need to be special. I am special.” 🌱
👵 Family, Trauma and Forgiveness
She doesn’t have the best relationship with her family. As an American, she doesn’t send money home every month, partly because she doesn’t want dependence that leads to more asking, and she feels guilty about it in Chinese culture. Her mom now asks her for money. 🏮
Her grandmother hit her and locked her in a room as a child, which made her more scared of the world. Crying in the mirror, she once told herself, “I will never forget this moment.” 🪞
Her advice to her younger self: let it go. You can break the cycle without holding on to the memory. To her grandmother, who likely lived through war and revolution, she’d say: “I forgive you… I understand, and I’m sorry.” 🕊️
With $10 million, she’d give her mom an allowance, enough for the house but not enough to feed a gambling habit. 💵
🚀 Best Year, Worst Year and Her 5-Year Goal
2025 is both her best and worst year. Best: first trips to Dubai, India and Estonia, thanks to Alex Drew of ODYS investing in her to interview top marketers. Worst: realizing how much she still has to learn. “I am not good enough, but… I’m going to be better than yesterday.” ✈️
She most admires Mads Singers, who in each new country asks organizers for an hour with their top students to remove their mindset limits. Read my interview with Mads Singers. 🔗
Other answers:
- 🇻🇳 Where to live: Vietnam, for the food, the people, and a live-in-the-now mindset
- 📱 Favorite contact: Jimmy, a high school friend and mechanical engineer at Apple who never judged her
- 🎯 In 5 years: a business with $3 million in profit
- 🤝 With $100M: give back to less privileged people with mindset and financial knowledge, because it’s hard to climb out of poverty
