✍️ From Freelance Writer to Content Consultant

Kevin got into SEO in 2014. “I’m never actually doing the SEO itself. I do content.” ✍️

He started as a freelance content writer, then made two courses: one on content writing and web copywriting, and one on AI content and running an AI content department, including hiring, training, systems, and operations. Now he consults on building content departments. 📚

He doesn’t really have employees. He works with a business partner on consulting projects, and on a separate agency he trains the team and handles quality control. 🧑‍🏫

🏷️ Why You Need to Be a Real Brand Now

It used to be easier. “You could just be an affiliate website and you could be successful.” 📉

Now it’s harder not to be a real brand with real products and services. To Google and LLMs, signals like these matter:

  • 🌐 A good website with real author profiles
  • 🛍️ Real products and services
  • 🔗 Good links from reputable websites
  • 📣 Brand mentions, branded search, Reddit mentions, and social presence

🤝 Getting Clients Without Paid Ads

Kevin doesn’t run Google or Facebook ads. It’s all “boots on the ground” marketing:

  • 🤝 Networking and cold outreach
  • 🎤 In-person workshops and lots of conferences
  • 👥 A Facebook group and his courses, which built his email list
  • 🎙️ Podcast appearances and YouTube

His next step is a community with tripwire products like content department guidelines, SOPs, a free webinar, and a free course, and then he’ll run ads to that. 🚀

His best advice, from several people: niche down to one offer, delegate, and focus on growing it. He’s now scaling his consulting offer for agencies and brands by bringing in a business partner and a salesperson. “It’s just not possible to do it all. I tried.” 🎯

🌏 Why He Wishes He’d Moved to Asia Sooner

Kevin’s biggest regret is not leaving the US sooner for a remote life. He moved to Europe at 23 or 24 and spent four years there, but didn’t get to Asia until 2016. 🌍

Before that: he got kicked out of Southern Connecticut State University for not going to class, played internet poker until he went broke, delivered furniture, went to community college, and then taught English in Europe before working online. 🧳

Back home, life meant work, school, and traffic on I-95 in the cold. In Thailand he spends about $2,500–3,000 a month on everything, food is amazing, and SEO meetups and conferences in Chiang Mai, Saigon, Bangkok, and Shenzhen are close by. “It costs like $3,000 to be homeless in Connecticut.” 🇹🇭

🎸 Music, Stress and His Biggest Advice

Kevin has played guitar since he was about 11, plus bass and now drums. At night he puts on headphones and “just rocks out” to get out of work mode. He also plays basketball at Chiang Mai University and goes to the gym. 🎸

He admits he almost seeks out stress, starting new projects even with a million things to do. 😅

The worst advice he got came from his boss at the furniture company: graduate, work, take two weeks of vacation a year for 40 years, then retire. “It’s not a bad life, but I just remember thinking, that’s not me. I’ve got to get out of here.” 🚪

More personal answers:

  • 🎶 A day with: guitarist Paul Gilbert or John Mayer, or on the business side, Steve Ballmer for his magnetic personality
  • 🚀 Last wish: to go to space and see the moon up close
  • 🐔 $10M lottery: a farm with chickens, cows, and sheep, a music studio, a basketball court, and writing movie scripts as passion projects
  • 🇹🇭 Where to live: Thailand, or maybe Japan
  • 💍 Marriage: still relevant for legal reasons like shared accounts, insurance, and visas, but people shouldn’t feel pressured, and he dislikes the wedding industry

📅 His Worst Year, Best Year and Quitting Drinking

2023 was the worst. He got “really out of control with the partying,” and AI upended his content business. He wondered if content writing would survive and whether he’d have to move home and start over. 😞

Then he quit drinking, about 21 months before our interview, stopped partying, focused on work, and changed his business approach. The last 12 months have been the best: healthier, working on what he enjoys, more time for music, and more settled. 🌱

He used to be a night owl who woke at 3 p.m. Now he gets up around 7:30 or 8. “The crash was a good thing, because it made me re-evaluate.” 🌅

📝 Key Takeaways From the Kevin Meng Interview

  • 🏷️ Be a real brand, because affiliate-only sites don’t cut it anymore
  • 🤝 Networking, workshops and content can bring clients without ads
  • 🎯 Niche down to one offer and delegate
  • 🌏 Remote life in Asia can be cheaper and calmer
  • 🎸 Have a non-work outlet to switch off
  • 🌱 A crash can be the push you need to change
