The best compliment he’s ever received has nothing to do with SEO: “That I’m a good dad.” 👨👧
At the Chiang Mai SEO conference, I sat down with Rafid Nassir, Commercial Director at The Search Initiative, Matt Diggity’s SEO agency. 🎙️

🎯 Google Wants Satisfied Searchers
Rafid looks after sales, marketing and partnerships at The Search Initiative. 🤝
At an abstract level, Google wants search results to be as satisfying for the searcher as possible, delivering relevance and a positive experience. It once tried giving people what they need instead of what they want, “but that didn’t really work.” 🎯
🔄 Why Copying the Top 10 Can Fail
Technical SEOs often look at the top 10 for a client’s keywords, spot what the winning pages share, and move the client’s pages closer to that pattern. 📊
The problem with recent updates hitting affiliate sites is that Google can change intent like that, and the strategy you modeled needs a complete rethink. 🔄
You can bypass that with lateral, creative thinking: understand keywords “from a human level.” That’s hard for very technical SEOs. 🧠

🤖 Does AI Content Do Its Job?
Whether AI or a human created it, the question is the same: does the content do its job? 🕶️
Sunglasses have a job: block UV and reduce glare. Content’s job depends on the intent, the keyword, and who lands on the page. If it gives them what they’re looking for, “it’s doing its job.” It doesn’t matter if it’s “done by AI, done by me, done by my mom.” ✅
Edited properly, AI content avoids plagiarism problems. But a block of text repeating keywords just to rank is “just gaming the system,” and keyword density doesn’t work anymore. 🚫

💸 The Catch-22 for Hit Sites
After updates, it’s a Catch-22. Badly hit sites want to invest in recovery, but often no longer earn enough to pay for it. 💸
TSI isn’t cheap. Rafid says each deliverable is competitively priced, but they require a strong minimum budget to deliver results, which rules some people out. They only take projects they’re highly confident will succeed. 📈
At Chiang Mai, he catches up with friends, clients, referral partners and white-labelers, and says it’s the “best conference in the world.” His honest confession: he also comes for the mango sticky rice. 🥭

😨 Fear, Mistakes and Being a Good Dad
Does he have fears? He has faced them: “They never really go away, but you become bigger than them.” 💪
The outcomes he fears are losing family, not being able to provide, and not becoming the best version of himself. He’s afraid of reaching 85 without the energy to do what he “could have and should have done.” ⏳
His biggest financial mistake was buying stock for an e-commerce site and holding it, losing thousands, maybe tens of thousands. He still has the goods, which hold their value, so he calls it experience rather than failure. 📦
His best compliment: “That I’m a good dad.” 💛
