Alex Drew Odys CEO Explains Why Aged Domains Matters in SEO

Odys hired one person in India, who brought in their family. Today, Odys Global’s entire due diligence department is a family operation, and in 10 years they’ve never laid anyone off. 💛

At the Chiang Mai SEO conference, I sat down with Alex Drew, founder of Odys Global, who is based in Estonia. 🎙️

We talked about why aged domains still matter, trademark checks, how Odys works, real use cases, and why mentorship might be the missing piece after a Google update. 🌐

📊 In this episode, we unpacked:

  • 🌐 From aged domain shop to marketplace
  • 🧱 The basics still apply
  • ⚖️ Zero tolerance for trademarks
  • 🛒 How Odys sources and lists domains
  • 🐎 Real aged domain use cases
  • 🧑‍🏫 The Odys mentorship program

🌐 From Aged Domain Shop to Marketplace

Odys started as an aged domain shop with 100% of its own inventory. It’s now a full marketplace, segmented with new services and a mentorship program. 🏪

Alex doesn’t see rivals as competition. After meeting Kalin from SEO Domains and Anthony from Domain Coasters, he captioned their photo: “Let’s not compete, let’s innovate.” 🤝

🧱 The Basics Still Apply

On the big 2023 updates, Alex pointed to Kyle Roof’s talk: the basics still apply. Google says links don’t matter much, but “everyone has proven them off.” 🔗

He hasn’t seen a case where you don’t need a domain or website to provide information online. Voice search and AI may change that someday, “but we still need domains and websites to serve information.” 🌐

⚖️ Zero Tolerance for Trademarks

What sets Odys apart is very strict due diligence, especially zero tolerance for trademarks. ⚖️

They check the US Patent and Trademark Office and WIPO’s international database. It can’t be fully automated, so a team does it, and a part-time lawyer advises when they’re unsure. 🔍

Why it matters: if you buy a domain close to a trademark and use it in a similar niche, “the liability passes to you.” Trademark issues seem rare until someone builds a brand, gets attention, and gets pursued. 🚨

🛒 How Odys Sources and Lists Domains

Originally, Odys bought all its inventory from auctions and private investors. 🏷️

Now sellers can list domains too. Submit, say, 10–20 domains you don’t need, Odys runs due diligence, recommends which have demand (for example, list at $3,000–5,000), and takes a commission when they sell. 💰

I’ve been trying to sell some aged domains from my own inventory, so that someone can build a brand on them. 🙌

🐎 Real Aged Domain Use Cases

  • 🐎 Starting a site on a relevant brandable domain: one buyer built what Alex calls the biggest horse racing site in the UK on a .org that formerly belonged to an organization curating UK racetracks. “Just like dating, you need a good match”
  • 🔄 Rebranding to recover from penalties via redirects, which Alex says works, but you still must improve content and fix what Google penalized

Use 301 redirects for a real business reason, not just an SEO outcome. When I started, I made mistakes like redirecting everything to the homepage instead of announcing the acquisition with a relevant press-style article. ↪️

An aged domain is a good start, but structure matters. Get your homepage, About page and processes right, or the site can tank in updates. Odys now also offers hosting, content in topic clusters, 301 services, and an E-E-A-T audit. 🛠️

🧑‍🏫 The Odys Mentorship Program

Alex once had about 1,000 Skype contacts he helped while buying and selling. When the marketplace launched, the questions outgrew him, so he invited people from the Odys list to take paid calls helping site owners with real problems. 📞

Mentors also go through strict vetting: they need a successful business and proof of successful websites. You can even book a strategy call before buying a domain. They bought seomentor.com, which redirects to the program. ✅

His intuition is that Google updates will happen even more often. After 15 years, he sees that the people still standing found the motivation to keep going, “regardless how many sites they lost.” Mentors provide the know-how and encouragement, “the missing puzzle.” 🧩

Odys runs weekly talk shows streamed on YouTube and may hold regional meetups later. Alex’s team also helped send Annie Ma to interview top marketers. Read Annie Ma’s story. 🔗
