Ritu David Interview: Omnichannel Strategy, Emotional Marketing and Social Media ROI

Ritu David is a strategy and data consultant who returned to India after 27 years overseas and now leads the firm The Data Duck. In this Ritu David interview, recorded on video for my blog in 2015, she explains omnichannel marketing, emotional connection with customers, co-founder equity and how to judge social media ROI.

Ritu is a rare kind of leader, one who simplifies. She can cut through argument and doubt to offer a solution everyone understands. Her data analytics and organizational change work earned her the nickname ‘the Flipper’, for turning average revenue units into ones that optimize monetization and brand positioning.

Key Takeaways from the Ritu David Interview

  • Omnichannel means integration. Her work connects a company’s digital and technology channels with its traditional operations.
  • Set expectations first. She agrees on expectations before starting with a client and reviews them throughout, so there is no delivery gap.
  • Digital word of mouth is an asset. She said most urban Indian consumers are within two degrees of digital, through themselves or their children.
  • Emotion drives buying. Each platform carries its own emotion, so match your message to the touch point.
  • Split equity by future contribution. She suggests a net present value view of each co-founder’s contribution.
  • Don’t chase likes alone. Optimizing only for likes and shares can produce a campaign that is not optimal for your brand.

Who Is Ritu David?

Ritu has led large-scale strategic initiatives across industries at a global level. Before moving to India, she worked as a digital media consultant in Sydney and Singapore. In India she served as consulting CEO of Social Samosa and founded Ritu David Consulting, an omnichannel business consulting firm built on business acumen, data insights and technology.

Ritu David Interview Highlights

What does an omnichannel consultant do?

Ritu helps businesses integrate their digital and technology channels into their traditional operations. She does not sell a product online, but the internet still drives her business: after a referral, people look at her website and past work, then connect over email and Skype.

What were her plans for the next three years?

She planned to keep delivering value through her consulting firm, launch a networking app for businesses and conferences, and write a book. She added that three years is a long time in the digital world, so she expected to be doing even more than she could picture.

How does she explain digital marketing to clients?

She sets expectations before starting and runs reviews along the way, so there is no expectation gap. To explain digital marketing, she uses a restaurant. In the past, you heard about a new restaurant through a newspaper flyer, the radio or your neighbors. Digital lets you reach every person who wants to eat at your restaurant, directly or indirectly. In her view, most urban Indian consumers are two degrees of freedom from digital: if parents are not on social media, their children are.

What is it like doing business in India after 27 years overseas?

She described it as riding a growth wave. The relative lack of enforced structure leaves room to do business more creatively, and she was most impressed by the people.

The talent that we have here is phenomenal, and everyone wants to grow.

Why do emotions matter in marketing?

Emotions guide us as humans, and people often forget to build an emotional connection with their customers. Think of the last three things you enjoyed buying, and you can probably name the emotion behind each one. She also pointed out that each touch point carries its own emotion: on Facebook, people want to be with friends and family, while on LinkedIn the emotion is professional growth. Pick the touch point that matches the emotion you want to meet.

How should co-founders divide equity?

At the start, founders think about the business as it is today, but it will look very different later. Equity can be split one way and pay another. Her test is who will have the biggest impact and who is crucial to keep. Rather than rewarding whoever had the idea, she suggests a net present value of contribution analysis to guide the split.

How should you measure ROI on social media?

Social media gives you metrics, though not great ones, so people expect precise numbers from it. She asks what analytics you run on a TV commercial. Nobody proves that one viewer came to a store because of one ad. If you focus only on likes and shares, you end up building a campaign that is not optimal for your brand.

My Take: Why Ritu’s Advice Still Matters

Ritu called me one of her closest friends in the startup scene, and this conversation has aged well. Today’s AI and data tools give us far more metrics, but her core idea stands: connect with customers emotionally at the right touch point, and judge marketing by its effect on the business, not by vanity numbers.
