What Is White Hat vs Black Hat Affiliate Marketing? Greg Rollett’s View
What is white hat affiliate marketing? In Greg Rollett’s view, it means promoting genuinely great products that customers rave about, and paying marketers what they deserve, without sliding into small compromises that lead to black hat tactics.
Greg says most people get into affiliate to make money fast, and quick money often means black hat, sometimes without people even realising it. Over time you get pulled into “this vortex” of small compromises.
About 20 years ago he looked at the offers at affiliate conferences (e-cigs, acai berry, sketchy weight loss) and asked himself: would I put my face in front of these? The answer was no. So he left affiliate for about 15 years and built a business selling information products, coaching and speaking.
He came back through GiddyUp because they were finding genuinely great products that customers raved about, and paying marketers what they deserve.
“I don’t think people get into affiliate to do evil things. Everybody wants to make money, and we want to make money today.” -Greg Rollett
He also warned about offer chasing. GLP-1s are hot now, crypto was hot before, and when an offer disappears you rebuild everything from scratch. With kids and a house, Greg wants stability, not anxiety.
The $37 Million PhotoStick Story
Greg’s favourite proof that white hat pays: one GiddyUp marketing partner has run a single offer for 10 years and been paid about $37 million.
The product? PhotoStick, a simple device that backs up the photos on your phone. The audience is mostly mums with 20,000 photos who are scared of losing them. Simple, useful, and it works.
How Do Bundles and Upsells Change Affiliate Payouts?
Greg also explained why payouts matter. A $20 product at 10% is $2 a sale, which nobody can live on. But with bundles and upsells that raise the average order value to $50–60, affiliates can earn $30–40 a sale.
And there’s something bigger: being part of a brand’s journey. GiddyUp’s affiliates helped a memory-digitising brand (old VHS tapes and home videos) do hundreds of millions in sales over 12 years, until it was acquired by Ancestry.com.
“I can actually see myself working with this brand for five years.” -Greg Rollett, on how to choose offers

What Are the Hottest White Hat Niches in 2026?
Greg’s pick: health and wellness gadgets that solve a problem instantly, like snore strips, breathing strips and vagus nerve devices.
We live in a TikTok world. If a product needs 10 minutes of explanation, it won’t work. Viewers need to know within seconds: I have this problem, this fixes it. Clear before-and-after products win.
He thinks the size of your income comes down to how much you’re willing to risk. Even profitable affiliates spending $10K a day to make $20K are scared to scale to $20K because they don’t want to break a good thing. That mental block holds affiliates back more than skills do.

How Does GiddyUp Vet Its Affiliates? Only 3 to 4 Accepted a Week
GiddyUp has about 1,500 active marketing partners. It gets hundreds of applications a week and accepts just three or four.
- Two interviews: every applicant is vetted by two different partners
- Legit traffic only: native, TikTok, YouTube, Google and Meta. Cloaking is an automatic no
- Experience: if you’ve never spent your own money on ads, you’re probably not a fit yet, unless someone recommends you
Why so strict? GiddyUp puts its reputation on the line with brands, and “the brands are what drive it all”. In return, the team helps approved affiliates with strategy, and an in-house creative team builds ads around hooks that are already working.
What Is Grommet Compass? AI Agents That Replaced Cold Outreach
Greg calls himself “the biggest AI fan on the planet” and says he lives in Codex and Claude Code. He used to need a team to execute his strategy and copy. Now he builds landers and free lead-gen tools in minutes.
“The cost of execution has gone down, the speed of execution has gone up.” –Greg Rollett
He hasn’t fired anyone because of AI, but he hasn’t hired because of it. Here’s his favourite example. Grommet, GiddyUp’s sister company, tested around 800 offers last year and needs new brands constantly. Two people used to cold email brands all day. When they moved on, Greg spent a month building Grommet Compass:
- Vertical AI agents (kitchen, health and wellness, and more) scan shopping and discovery sites like Wirecutter and Product Hunt
- Every morning they report new products, already vetted and tiered by brand quality
- They check if a brand already does affiliate marketing, for example by looking at its Shopify plugins
- Greg says yes, and an automated email campaign goes out
He compares it to having seven $60,000-a-year employees working at all times.

The quote above Greg’s desk comes from advertising legend David Ogilvy:
“You can’t save souls in an empty church.” -David Ogilvy, Greg’s favourite quote
Even if you have the best product in the world, without marketing nobody hears about it.
The advice that fixed his biggest vice (trying to do everything) came from an expensive business coach: “Become Jay-Z the rapper before you become Jay-Z the mogul.” Jay-Z sold tens of millions of albums before launching clothing, vodka or an agency. Go deep first, then go wide.
Greg admires Elon Musk but would ask him about the personal cost. Greg hasn’t missed his 13-year-old’s baseball games in years, and legends like Brian Tracy and Jack Canfield told him their biggest regret was missing family moments while on the road. His view: know your own “enough number”. Yours doesn’t have to be Elon’s.
His best decision ever? At 22, as a college dropout and touring rapper who had just proposed, he swallowed his pride and went with his future in-laws to an internet marketing event they got from a postcard in the mail. It changed his life.
