🎰 From Casino Floor to WordPress Freelancer

About 12 years ago, Darrel worked in a casino. On the side, he was learning to build websites with WordPress, Joomla and Drupal from YouTube tutorials. 💻

He started small, building sites for family and friends for around $200, “just so I can say I’m hustling”. Back then themes were the page builders, and he admits he was a terrible designer. Eventually he left the casino to freelance full-time. 🛠️

What got him into WordPress in the first place? Hiking. He loved hiking in California and wanted his own blog to record his hikes instead of posting them on Facebook. 🥾

📺 15 Videos With No Views Before One Took Off

Darrel uploaded his first YouTube video in 2016. For the first six months, every video was “terrible”: no views, no likes, no comments. 😩

He posted about 15 videos in his first year. The 16th finally got some momentum, and that’s how everything started. 🚀

His family thought being a YouTuber was ridiculous. Back then it wasn’t seen as a real job, though it did come with some prestige. “Today you’re like another influencer,” he jokes.

Would he start a WordPress channel today? Yes. Saturation is overrated, he says: new personalities resonate with different people, and there’s always an audience for everyone. And going viral is easier now, because it’s more about keywords than luck. 🎯

🏠 How Darrel Ended Up Working With Hostinger

His hosting journey started with HostGator, whose affiliate program he calls “wacky”. Then came TMDHosting, NameHero, SiteGround and others. Many were good hosts with affiliate programs that didn’t work well. 🔄

Hostinger had been asking him to promote them for about five years, but he felt their site, servers and plans needed work. Once they became more professional and credible, he switched from SiteGround to Hostinger, and says their hosting surprised him as “top-notch”. He also likes that they keep up with trends like vibe coding and VPS for AI agents. ✅

As a top affiliate, he says they treat him well: custom landing pages or coupon codes on request, and heads-ups on releases and trends. His manager told him about OpenClaw before everyone on YouTube was talking about it. 📣

The smartest thing I’ve probably done is switching over to Hostinger.

Why? His conversions went up by about 30% overnight. Recommend something too expensive or complicated and you lose twice: no commission, and viewers stop watching your video. 💡

💰 YouTube Ad Revenue vs Affiliate Commissions

For Darrel, affiliate revenue is way more than YouTube revenue. Views on SaaS and hosting videos are worth much more: 10,000 views on a WordPress video might earn a few hundred dollars, while 10,000 views on an AI video might bring $50–100. That’s why so many AI channels sell their own “schools”. 📊

His videos work as a funnel that helps everyone: viewers learn to build a website, they need hosting to do it, he earns a commission, and the host gets a customer. Genuine teaching beats generic “hosting review” videos. 🤝

On income, he says he’s in the six- to seven-figure range, and he can make $50,000–100,000 a month if he works six or seven days a week. But sometimes he steps away for a month and takes the hit, because health matters more. His best week was about $50K, and his best month, during COVID, was around $150K. 📈

🌍 Translating His Channel With AI

About three years ago Darrel launched Spanish, Arabic and Portuguese channels. Over time they switched to HeyGen, which translates his videos and lip-syncs so it looks like he’s speaking the language. 🗣️

Each video costs a few hundred dollars to make, but two or three affiliate commissions pay for it. Today about 20% of all his affiliate commissions come from those channels. 💰

🤖 The AI Tools Darrel Actually Uses

Darrel uses AI, but selectively:

• ✍️ Claude for intro scripts: he asks for a few versions and mixes them with his own
• 🗒️ He writes his own outlines, often at Starbucks, because AI “understands the hook really well” but not how people watch YouTube
• 🏷️ ChatGPT for descriptions, tags and titles
• 🧪 YouTube’s A/B testing for titles and thumbnails

His honest view: about 80% of AI tools are overrated. He found OpenClaw “incredibly overrated” and buggy, and AI agents get expensive because you burn through credits. “You don’t need OpenClaw to send you a summary of your daily emails.” 😅

On SEO, his own site’s traffic has stayed steady through Google’s updates because he never relied on expired domains or mass AI content. ⚠️ Bought Views, Clickbait and Risky Affiliate Programs

Darrel says his niche can be very black hat. Some creators buy watch time (buying plain views hurts retention), and you can spot it when views don’t match the likes and comments. It’s too big a gamble for him: channels can get strikes or be terminated. He’s even told Hostinger to check a channel’s comments and like ratio before sponsoring it. 🚫

He’s also glad YouTube is cracking down on predatory clickbait like “I made $7 million a year”, which can now get strikes for unrealistic claims. 👍

Darrel first came to Thailand on friends’ advice, went straight to Phuket, and extended a two-week trip to a month. The beaches, sailing, cheap and amazing food, and friendly people won him over, and he eventually moved there permanently. 🇹🇭

His best year was COVID: everyone was learning to build websites and make money online, and his revenue rose about 50%. The worst were the years before that, building the channel. His worst investment was a second house in the US, bought about a year after COVID: its value fell about 20%, and a tenant lived rent-free for a year. 🏠
