Who Is Gerry White?

Gerry White is a London-based SEO consultant with more than 20 years in digital marketing. He runs Dergal Ltd, a consultancy that takes on technical and strategic SEO problems, judges the UK Search Awards, and co-founded TakeItOffline. 🇬🇧

He’s worked with some big UK names. One correction he made on the show is worth repeating: he didn’t lead SEO at the BBC. He was an analytics consultant at the BBC, helping with SEO and working closely with their head of SEO. Later he spent years on SEO at Just Eat.

You can connect with him on LinkedIn.

Gerry White on SEO in 2026: Is It the Same Game, Just Faster?

When I asked what’s going on in search right now, Gerry said it’s the same SEO it’s always been, just moving much faster. His example hit hard: one client lost roughly 40% of its traffic almost overnight when AI answers switched on in France, and the client is French. 🇫🇷

So the impact of AI Overviews is easy to see. What’s hard is everything behind it. With LLMs, you can’t see the prompts people use or what’s happening behind the scenes. You can see that your brand is being talked about and roughly how much, and that’s about it.

Gerry doesn’t panic about this. He calls it classic marketing again, and the basics still apply: make sure your site is crawlable and the fundamentals are in place.

For a deeper look at the measurement side, Anirudh Agarwal explained how to rank inside ChatGPT and AI search.

“I will spend almost twice as long researching and learning about things. It’s a great time, it’s exciting and I love it.” – Gerry White

Are Listicles and Reddit Shortcuts Safe for AI Visibility?

Plenty of SEOs are buying press releases and listicle placements to show up in LLM answers. Gerry pointed to a talk by Lily Ray: being in listicles in some places isn’t bad, but if your entire strategy is listicles everywhere, that pattern gets cut the moment Google decides to act on it.

Reddit works the same way. Being part of real conversations is good. Creating and answering your own threads with little engagement looks unnatural, and the platform will treat it as a problem and remove it. His rule: every tactic has to be done intelligently, not hard and deep because it’s the new thing.

Why Is Gerry White Pushing Clients Toward Video?

A lot of what Gerry recommends to clients right now is video, with one condition: make good video, not bad video. As a user, when the answer to his search is a YouTube video, that’s the result he clicks.

It pays twice, because LLMs pull information straight from video. When he looks at prompts and the answers coming back, a big share comes from YouTube. One of his clients even builds strategy around the creators whose videos already rank, reaching out and working with them. The hard part is doing it naturally and professionally, “not white hat, but white enough” that nothing gets flagged in Google.

What Is Product-Led SEO and Search Everywhere Optimization?

Gerry’s LinkedIn tagline mentions product-led marketing, so I asked what that means. At Just Eat, his job wasn’t writing blog content. It was making sure the product itself worked for search. For an e-commerce site or a property portal, optimizing the platform has much more impact at enterprise level than adding content on the side.

What Is Search Everywhere Optimization?

That ties into a phrase one of his ex-colleagues made popular: search everywhere optimization. If someone searches on TikTok, your product should be there. TikTok also pulls in data like places and reviews, so a video that’s tagged in the right place and backed by good reviews becomes a lot more powerful than a video posted and forgotten.

Jes Scholz talked about how AI Mode changed SEO in a similar spirit.

What Are Gerry White’s Enterprise SEO War Stories From Just Eat?

I asked about the hardest people problem he solved at Just Eat. There were plenty: acquisitions, JavaScript-based websites in Canada, and in Australia two of their own sites competing with each other while a third competitor pulled ahead.

The best story was order action schema. Google told them that a bit of schema would add an order link to restaurants’ knowledge panels. It sounded simple. Then:

  • Restaurants complained, thinking Just Eat was injecting itself into their listings
  • The legal team asked who gave permission, even though it was a Google feature
  • The team had to build ways to remove it, and pulled it from the UK for six months, at a big revenue cost
  • Google then switched it to a feed, and a month later changed the spec again

Each change meant going back to developers who had a hundred other priorities on a global platform: UX, page speed, SEO and everything else. “I just want all the developers working for me 100% of the time,” he joked. “No business will give me that.”

What Is Gerry White’s Best Advice? Two Ears, One Mouth

Gerry’s best piece of advice: two ears, one mouth. Listen twice as much as you speak. He’s seen too many people tell developers how to do things instead of listening to the problem they’re dealing with.

His favorite childhood memory is skiing in Italy. He described it as everything going clear while you fly along at speed, and it’s also where he discovered Italian coffee.

His best year in business was his second year at Just Eat. The first was chaotic. By the second, he was involved in everything, and his boss, who wasn’t an SEO person, told him he had no idea what Gerry did but he was everywhere.

The worst was a year at an electronics company. The site wasn’t on HTTPS and wasn’t mobile optimized, but a code freeze ahead of a planned migration meant he couldn’t fix the big problems. He built some internal linking that made a financial difference, but it didn’t put out the fires.

And if he could spend a day with one well-known entrepreneur? Bill Gates, to hear about the early garage days when everything was new and a bit crazy.

How Does Gerry White Feel About AI, Content and Jobs?

As an SEO, Gerry dislikes what AI is doing to traffic and engagement. If he publishes great content, he doesn’t want it taken and resold to users. He compared it to asking an AI for art in the style of Banksy: it looks a bit like a Banksy, but it isn’t one. The old deal, where you visit the site and see the brand, is breaking.

As a user, he loves it. AI sorts his emails into what needs action, and before this trip it found hotels near the venue and checked reviews for good Wi-Fi. He also uses Claude daily. But he also called the future terrifying, and as an Isaac Asimov fan he sees a real risk of AI doing something bad.

On jobs, he’s optimistic. People predicted mass job losses with computers and the industrial revolution, and it didn’t play out that way. Jobs will change. He’s told his two teenage kids to look for work that AI complements rather than replaces, and he noted that many companies that cut staff have since rehired.

Siddharth Ajmera took a darker view of AI and jobs on an earlier episode.

How Did Claude Make a Freelance SEO Consultant 10x More Efficient?

Gerry says his efficiency has improved tenfold. For a client report that’s budgeted at half a day, he now argues his thinking out with Claude, which is connected to tools like Similarweb and Screaming Frog. The output is still his, but the client gets roughly twice the quality for the same time. “It should mean I should double my prices,” he laughed.

If you want to see how a full agency runs on Claude, Jason Hunt walked through the Merged Media playbook.

What Is Gerry White’s Advice for Freelancers in the AI Era?

His advice for anyone trying to freelance and make money online with AI:

  • Listen to the experts working at the deep end, like Lily Ray
  • Experiment for yourself. He tries every LLM and GEO tool he can, including ones few people have heard of, because some will matter later
  • Use your brain as much as the tools. The tool output is only half the answer

FAQs About Gerry White and SEO

Gerry White is a London-based SEO consultant with more than 20 years in digital marketing. He founded Dergal Ltd, judges the UK Search Awards and co-founded TakeItOffline. He worked on SEO at Just Eat for several years and was an analytics consultant at the BBC. This interview was recorded in Delhi.

It covers his 20-plus years in digital marketing, his move to independent consulting, how AI answers cut one client’s traffic by about 40%, why LLM visibility is a black box, the risks of listicle-only strategies, the case for good video, product-led SEO and his Just Eat war stories.

No. On the podcast he clarified that he was an analytics consultant at the BBC, helping with SEO and working closely with their head of SEO. He later spent years working on SEO at Just Eat. This correction came from Gerry himself during the interview.

He sees SEO as the same discipline moving much faster. AI answers can cut traffic sharply, and LLM visibility is a black box, but crawlability and fundamentals still matter. He warns that shortcuts like listicle-only strategies tend to get cut, and he uses Claude daily to work more efficiently.

It is the idea that your brand and products should show up wherever people search, including TikTok, YouTube, reviews and AI answers, not only on Google. Gerry says TikTok pulls in data like places and reviews, so a tagged video backed by good reviews is far more powerful.

In Gerry’s experience at Just Eat, product-led SEO means making sure the product itself works for search, instead of only writing content. For e-commerce sites or property portals, he says optimizing the platform has much more impact at enterprise level than adding content on the side.

He connects Claude to tools like Similarweb and Screaming Frog and argues his thinking out with it. For a client report budgeted at half a day, he says the client now gets roughly twice the quality in the same time. He says his efficiency has improved tenfold, but the final output is still his.

Listen to experts working at the deep end, like Lily Ray, experiment with every LLM and GEO tool you can, and use your own brain as much as the tools. His wider life advice is “two ears, one mouth”: listen twice as much as you speak.

Final Thoughts on the Gerry White SEO Story

The Gerry White SEO story comes down to a few steady ideas: it’s the same game moving faster, the basics still matter, shortcuts get cut, good video and good products win, and AI should raise your quality, not replace your judgment. And always remember: two ears, one mouth.
