🚀 Getting Started on Fiverr
First, decide what skills you have: logo design, social media, content writing, SEO. Then look for clients who need exactly that. 🚀
For newbies, Fiverr is a great start. Gigs begin at $5, but it’s a big opportunity. Once you have experience and reviews, move on to Freelancer.com and Upwork (formerly oDesk). You can also find clients by searching Facebook and Google for things like “logo design jobs”. For getting paid internationally, read how Payoneer helps freelancers. 🔗
📁 Building a Portfolio That Sells
Have a content plan and a strong about page: your skills, past work, clients, testimonials and education. Show past companies you’ve worked for, always ask for testimonials, and list specific services. 📁
Newbies with no clients yet should build a simple site that shows their skills, create social profiles and engage with experienced freelancers. Use social media wisely: I use Facebook for business leads, not chatting, plus LinkedIn and Twitter.
🗂️ Workflow, Contracts and Client Records
In the beginning, I had no workflow and lost big dollars because of it. Segment your tasks, plan hours per client, and don’t hurry: hurry up and you’ll mess up. 🗂️
Have proper contracts covering the work and timeline, so payments and delivery are secure. And save your clients’ details. Early on, I didn’t save email IDs, so I lost clients and repeat business. Also choose business partners carefully: I picked a wrong partner once and took a huge loss. Learn from your failures.
💵 How I Landed My First $650 Deal
I found a US web design company with a great website, emailed the owner and asked if they’d like a review of their services on my blog. They saw BloggersIdeas, were impressed, and paid me $650 for that single deal. 💵
Your blog works as your portfolio. Later, Payoneer saw my blog and social presence and made us brand ambassadors in India, and other brands followed. A buyer even offered me $150,000 for my blog. I said no, because it’s my baby. For how I built on this, read how I earn six figures from affiliate marketing. 🔗
🌐 Growing to $5,000 a Month
Add income streams: services, affiliate marketing, banner ads and domain selling. Premium domains can sell for a lot on sites like Flippa, and expireddomains.net helps you find names. My friend Ashwin, whom I met at a startup weekend in Delhi, sells premium domains for $30,000 to $50,000 each. For more on that, read Ashwin’s domaining interview. 🌐
Work on referral business, build a team and outsource, keep hunting clients rather than depending on one, and never rely on a single platform or skill. Your network is your net worth. Be patient: the money comes after about six months of building skills and a portfolio. Don’t depend on AdSense alone, since accounts can be banned. Try networks like Infolinks too. For a young freelancer’s story, read Umer Qureshi’s interview. 🔗
