Jon Yau: Why He Bought StockPhoto.com for $250K (His Wife Is Still Angry 😅)

“$250,000 sounds very big for a domain name, but a Subway or McDonald’s franchise costs much, much more.” 💸

At DomainX and BlogX 2016 in Delhi, I asked Jon Yau, owner of StockPhoto.com, the question everyone had: why spend $250K on one domain? 🎙️

📊 In this episode, we unpacked:

  • 🎯 His checklist for a web startup
  • 💸 Why $250K made sense
  • 😅 The wife and the midlife crisis
  • 🪞 Copy, don’t fight, the competition

🎯 His Checklist for a Web Startup

Jon wanted to stop working for someone else and felt he had one web startup in him before he got too old. He saved carefully and set a business budget. 🎯

His requirements: a lifestyle business he could run alone, a digital product with no warehouses or delivery to manage, and a growth niche. He considered stock photos, code, music, video, themes and logos. StockPhoto.com came up first. For more on buying domains, read Kalin Karakehayov’s interview. 🔗

💸 Why $250K Made Sense

Compared with a franchise, he sees domain names and web businesses as cheap. He was careful with the money: a migrant family with young kids, not from wealth, he set aside a chunk of savings. 💸

The site runs on a $300 clone script, since it’s a basic e-commerce store with products, a cart, checkout and payment gateway. With two or three redesigns and some freelancing, he estimates he’d spent no more than $50,000 on top of the $250,000. 🛒

😅 The Wife and the Midlife Crisis

When I asked whether his wife was angry, he joked she’s “still very angry” with him, then said it’s fine. StockPhoto.com isn’t their only income. 😅

Half of it was for financial return and half was personal: “It’s a midlife crisis.” He called it his project and his masterpiece, and he plans to stick with it for decades. For another domainer at the event, read Manmeet Pal Singh’s interview. 🔗

🪞 Copy, Don’t Fight, the Competition

A generic domain brings a baseline of traffic, so he isn’t trying to beat giants like Shutterstock: “The best I can do is to copy them.” He wants a well-designed little corner shop that competes globally and works with people he likes. 🪞

Next was stock video, such as the looping videos on Airbnb’s landing page that help turn visitors into customers. For more domain stories from DomainFest, read Sedo broker Brian Michitti. 🔗

🚀 Just Launch

Jon comes from Perth, a mining town. In India, he heard conversations about JavaScript libraries and UX that reminded him of San Francisco. He bets India is the growth story. 🇮🇳

His advice: “You don’t have to wait till everything is perfect. Just launch.” If it doesn’t work, change it and go again, because time is the one thing you can’t replace. His health secret at 46? “A dosa a day keeps the doctor away.” 🚀
