🎬 What Are Microdramas and Why Are They a Big Opportunity?

Microdramas are short-form story episodes, anywhere from 30 seconds to 2 minutes long. Pankaj says it’s one of the buzzwords of the moment, with big producers and production houses moving into them. 📱

SocialPeta spotted the trend about four or five years ago. With very high mobile penetration around the world, especially in India and China, they expected short-form content to take off, and planned a niche platform so people could see what the major apps were doing with short dramas. 🌍

The appeal for viewers? Good cliffhangers, fresh stories and new genres, plus the freedom to pay for exactly what they want to watch instead of consuming only what’s available. 🍿

🧲 How Microdrama Apps Hook Viewers

Some story categories work globally. Pankaj points to revenge and romance as famous across the world. ❤️

Most microdrama apps market themselves through video, and the model is clever:

  • 🆓 The first episode is free
  • 🧗 It ends on a cliffhanger
  • 💳 To keep watching, you subscribe or make micro-transactions for the next episodes

If you spend 30 seconds on it, you cannot stop yourself from going to the next episode.

He tried it himself during testing, and even in categories that weren’t his favourite, he says they’d done it really nicely. No waiting a week for the next episode: everything is right there. ⚡

🤝 Brand Integration Inside Microdramas

Brand integration is still at the very beginning, but some producers are doing it well. Pankaj shared a few examples:

  • ☕ A love story where the couple works at a cafe, and the cafe is a real brand
  • 🎁 A game inside the microdrama where a brand offers prize money
  • 🛍️ Characters using brand products without hurting the story

The key is making the brand’s name appear without interrupting the story. Lots of testing is going on, and he expects more intelligent integrations going forward. 💡

🎮 Why Mobile Gaming Is a Huge Market for Brands

Since its start, SocialPeta has leaned towards gaming. “It’s not a child’s play anymore,” Pankaj says. After COVID, mobile games became one of the main ways people spend time, and many games now let you play socially with friends or people around the world. 🌐

For brands, that’s an opportunity. Hardcore gamers spend at least an hour a day in sessions, and smart ad placement can win attention without disturbing gameplay. 🎯

India stands out: about 1.5 billion people, with more than 65% of them young. SocialPeta covers more than 25 gaming subcategories, and knowing whether a user plays hardcore, mid-core or casual games lets advertisers segment their campaigns. 🤖 Where AI Is Delivering Real Impact in Mobile Marketing

Pankaj’s view is that AI, like any technology, gives you a base and an advantage, the same way machines saved us from queuing at a bank teller. The biggest win in mobile marketing is data availability and faster decisions. ⚡

If you make decisions manually, by the time you reach a conclusion you’re already behind the market. In a crowded world, informed decisions put you ahead of the curve, for gaming, non-gaming or any app. 📊

That’s where SocialPeta comes in for user acquisition:

  • 🌐 It covers 42 ad networks, including Japanese, Korean and recently Russian networks
  • 🖼️ It holds close to 2 billion creatives
  • ⏱️ Feeds refresh every hour, so you can see a creative published an hour ago
  • 📚 As a 10-year-old company, it has deep historical data

On AI and layoffs, Pankaj sees a cycle that’s happened before with automation. It’s time to learn, relearn and unlearn. Some people will be affected, but there are new opportunities too: people from non-tech backgrounds are building and running their own apps. 🎯 How to Beat Creative Fatigue in Mobile Game Ads

Mobile gaming is crowded: in any category, at least 100 games are doing very well and buying media heavily. Some big publishers put out thousands of creatives a day for one game. 😮

Pankaj’s advice for developers:

  • 🚫 Don’t bet on a “hero” creative. As per SocialPeta’s data, only about one creative in 10 works, if you’re lucky
  • 🔍 Do your homework first: check what segment leaders and direct competitors are doing
  • 🔁 Iterate before fatigue hits: test creative angles, messages and CTA tweaks, using AI to make more variations
  • 🌍 Run more localized campaigns
  • 📅 Look beyond installs to monetization and retention: a low CPM means nothing if users don’t come back by day seven

He bets that user acquisition people who spend two or three hours a day for a month studying a new market won’t struggle with creative fatigue. 💪

AI has also changed the creative workflow. Teams used to plan two or three days ahead, ask for 20–30 ad copies, go through rework and management approvals, all highly paid hours, and sometimes nothing worked. Now iterations can be ready in hours or even half an hour, which helps mid-size and small studios compete with segment leaders. 🚀

💰 Affiliate and Influencer Marketing in Mobile Gaming

Affiliate marketing is working really well in some categories, Pankaj says. Some of his clients in hardcore gaming use affiliates as one way to promote their ads, and many also work with influencers. 🎮

Studios get influencers to play their games and show new features, even while a game is still in beta. The benefit is first-party data and real feedback from users without launching a full campaign. He sees the biggest opportunities for affiliates and influencers in mid-core and hardcore games. 🎯

SocialPeta also has a strong presence in Southeast Asia, where many affiliate events happen, and its team attends to meet partners and learn from them. For a look at affiliate networks in India, see Parul Bhargava’s vCommission story. 🤝

🚀 SocialPeta’s Growth Plans

Pankaj joined SocialPeta about four years ago, and since then he estimates about 40% more features have been added, based on client feedback. The platform has grown from 26 networks to 42 and covers 70+ countries and regions. 📈

The big shift: clients don’t want raw data anymore. They want actionable insights and very customized reports, like what a specific app is doing in one region with only playable ads and a certain CTA. 🎯

The company has about 200 people worldwide. It’s headquartered in Beijing with a regional office in Singapore, and the team in India and Southeast Asia mostly works remotely. It completed 10 years last October. 🏢

Pankaj also shared how one of the biggest companies in the region signed a five-year deal: after demos and comparing other platforms, they realised it was a must-have tool for their day-to-day work. His take on selling software: “SaaS is a thought process.” For more on agencies and AI tools, read Jonah and Julia Bohnert on GoHighLevel’s AI features. 💼

☕ Pankaj Uniyal Beyond Work

In our icebreaker round, Pankaj shared a more personal side:

  • ☕ He starts the day with coffee (or chai in India), since he often works late nights with US clients
  • 🏸 He stays fit playing badminton (doubles), and used to love cricket
  • 👶 His best day was becoming a father
  • ✈️ If he won $10 million, he’d take a few days off and travel with his family; Scotland is on his wish list
  • 🚀 He’d choose to spend a day with Elon Musk, to learn how he manages so many companies
  • 👨 His hero is his dad, who worked a government job his whole life and moved cities for it
