📈 Harshit Jain’s Journey: SEO to Insurtech

Harshit started blogging as a hobby during his post-graduation. It became a passion, then a business: three years of blogging and digital marketing for brands. ✍️

Then came about 2.5 years as a digital marketer at a startup until its acquisition, followed by almost five years at HDFC Life, driving digital transformation and innovation with the senior leadership and building a team of about 150-200 developers and designers. That’s where he learned product thinking and moved into strategy. 🏢

Next was about two years helping build an insurtech venture called Hello Zindagi with Future Group. After that, he teamed up with former colleagues to solve insurance problems at scale, and CoverSure was born. That’s about 12 years in all. 🚀

🧩 The Gaps in How Indians Buy Insurance

Around 21 crore Indian households have bought some kind of insurance. But Harshit found they rarely understand it:

  • ❓ People don’t understand their policy. Ask basic questions and most can’t answer
  • 👀 No single view. We track financial and real estate portfolios, but not our protection portfolio
  • 👨‍👩‍👧 Families aren’t told. If something happens, they don’t know the policy exists
  • 📉 Insurance is confused with investment. It’s a protection product
  • ⚖️ People don’t know how much cover they need, or whether they’re paying the right price

CoverSure’s app lets you build one view of your protection portfolio, see inclusions and exclusions in plain language, find coverage gaps, and check whether you’re under- or over-insured. Harshit’s key difference: “The industry starts with sales. We start with service.” 🛎️

It also keeps your family informed, updating them every three months on your policies, sum assured, premiums and how to start a claim. Harshit added that even people who create a “what if I’m not here” folder rarely update it, and many never upgrade cover. A ₹5 lakh policy from five years ago may be too small after marriage and kids, and may not cover newer treatments like robotic surgery. 🤖

🏥 The ₹7.3 Lakh Claim That Got Rejected

Harshit shared a recent case. A man was in a car accident and spent 10-15 days in the ICU, around 20-25 days in hospital in total. The bill came to about ₹7,30,000. His family only then learned he had a ₹10 lakh policy. 🚑

The hospital had no cashless facility, so the family arranged the money themselves, which is a huge task for a middle-class family. When they filed for reimbursement, the claim was rejected, because the hospital was blacklisted by the insurer. 😞

Most people don’t know what network, cashless or blacklisted hospitals mean until they’re in an emergency. CoverSure launched a tool called Unfold: enter the three hospitals you’d go to, and it tells you whether they’re cashless or blacklisted. You can also check your insurer’s website, but most people don’t. 🔍

His point on products: there’s no “good” or “bad” policy, only suitable or unsuitable for your profile. A 20% deductible may be bad for you, but fantastic for a 65-year-old parent who otherwise can’t get health cover. 👴

💰 Unclaimed Insurance Money

The video description cites ₹37,000 crore in unclaimed insurance in India. Harshit said LIC alone has around ₹30,000-odd crore in unclaimed money from policies that matured but were never claimed. 😮 Often the policyholder never told the family, and in some cases they’re no longer alive.

If you count lapsed policies too, such as health or life covers that lapse after a missed renewal, he thinks the real figure could be two or three times higher. 📈

His tip: check the LIC website with your details or your parents’ details. CoverSure was also launching an unclaimed-policy finder that checks combinations like PAN, mobile number and date of birth. 🔎

👥 Building the Team: No Insurance Backgrounds

Surprisingly, CoverSure doesn’t hire people from insurance. Industry veterans bring blockers: “this can’t be done”, “digital won’t sell”, “you need 10 calls to close”. 🚫

About 60-70% of the team is Gen Z, under 25. They found the idea normal, innovative and scalable. Harshit says nobody there treats it as a day job: they’re partners, not employees or resources. 🤝

In interviews he looks for one thing, summed up in a Marwari saying: you have to get your own hands dirty. Skills can be added if you’re smart. He also checks whether candidates see AI as an enabler, because resisting AI is no longer an option. 🙌

📏 The HDFC Life Lesson: Scalability

His biggest lesson from HDFC Life was scalability. Many products worked beautifully in one branch or segment, then broke when rolled out to 100 branches. 💥

At CoverSure, every feature is tested against one question: can it work for 20 crore people? India’s users differ by language, thinking, devices and needs, from a tier-four town in Rajasthan to Assam to Mumbai. The app already changes its content and flow based on age (35 vs 50+) and whether you hold a policy. 📱

For now the focus is metros and tier-one cities, with language work underway. For another lesson in scaling a company in India, read how Sujay Pawar built a 500 Cr+ company. 🏗️

📊 Growth, Partners and Funding

CoverSure has about 2.5 lakh users after around 2.5 years, and more than 50% of installs and sign-ups are organic. Because they aren’t pushing sales, word of mouth is strong. 🗣️

Marketing focuses on brand and awareness, including an insurance-awareness tie-up with India Post and a creator partner whose own family had used insurance after an incident. They also use influencer, performance (Google and Meta) and affiliate marketing, but the goal for 2026-27 is more organic growth. 📣

As a corporate agent, CoverSure works with 12+ insurers, choosing partners with good products, customer experience and claims support. Harshit credits his co-founder and CEO Saurav with fundraising, and says they raised investment in the very first year. Their pitch: no one in India was building insurance at this scale from the service side. 💼

🤖 How CoverSure Uses AI

AI is everywhere at CoverSure:

  • 💻 About 60% of coding is now done through AI (vibe coding) by product managers and developers, roughly 10x what they shipped 2.5 years ago
  • 🎬 Video editing, graphics and content generation
  • 📋 Comparing products across insurers to find what suits a profile
  • 📲 Reminder calls and WhatsApp bots

AI and tools make up about 17-18% of overall costs, but he says they deliver around 10x returns. Since this is insurance, a human advisory team still checks the analysis every day. With 5,000+ products launched in the industry, accuracy is non-negotiable. ✅

Even his very religious mother uses ChatGPT by voice to check sunset timings for her fasting rituals in Mumbai or Jodhpur. “If my mom is using AI, everyone is.” 🙏 For more on AI in Indian business, read my AI make-money-online podcast.

❤️ Family, Mentors and Money

  • 🌅 Morning person now: he used to sleep at 2-3 AM when blogging. Now he wakes early to spend time with his two kids
  • 💑 His wife: his support system, and the person he debates ideas with
  • 🏁 Last wish: for CoverSure to succeed so Indians’ protection gaps close, and for more companies to focus on service, not just sales
  • 🧠 Day with: Amitabh Chaudhry, his former MD at HDFC Life, who told him, “I’m building a tech company that sells insurance”
  • 🔥 FIRE number: none. “We’re Marwaris. We keep working”
  • 💸 Money: important, but not the only target. Young people should chase skills that give 10x-100x returns, not just quick salary hikes
  • 🎟️ Lottery win: invest in startups solving novel problems and do social work, including helping animals
  • 🌍 Better world: help each other selflessly. It comes back
  • 🏅 Best compliment: his mentor and former boss telling his father how well he was doing
  • 🦸 Hero: mentor Anubhav Goyal, who taught him digital, vision and scale

His advice for Gen Z: success doesn’t come from trying something briefly and moving on. Be persistent, dedicated, and learn from the best mentors. 💪 For more founder lessons, read Udit Verma on success and sacrifice.
